It was during the First World War that American soldiers propagated this amiable tradition in Europe.

The date can vary according to the countries.

Mother’s day has not always been synonymous with the showcases of flowers and chocolates touted by commercials. The tradition is to pay homage to the one who gave life and comes from the end of the Middle Ages for the English, but it is lost little by little. During the Second World War, it was revived by the American soldiers stationed in Europe. Since then, the British have been trying to thank their mother with little attentions, small gifts and big cakes.

Mothering Sunday is traditionally accompanied by “Simnel Cake”, a cake with fruits and almond paste, sprinkled with sugar and violet. According to some interpretations, the Simnel name is derived from the Latin word simila which designates a flour of quality especially used for pastry.
